"The film-stills book of Watership Down that I received from a well-meaning uncle scarred me for life. That, and "The Pop-Up Book of Gnomes" fucked me up for real. I was way too young for the violence that likely wouldn't have phased me a few years later. As far as books I'd recommend, I'm a fantasy/science fiction kinda gal. Asimov's Foundation series is good. Margaret Atwood does dystopic near-future very well (Handmaid's Tale, Oryx & Crake). Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and American Gods are both excellent real-world-based fantasy books. Roger Zalazny's Amber books and the Hitchhiker's Guide are two very different, but very good fantastic-fantasy series'. And if you want weird-world fantasy, check out Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. There's over 30 books to date and they are very funny (but skip the first few since they aren't very good)."
