"I was invited to a Medal of Honor ceremony at the White House back in 1968 for some guys who were heroic (and lived!). I turned it down. The problem is that, 40 years later, few people care about the personal heroism in a messed up war. I'm sure this young man was a hero, no doubt. But the war criminals who invaded Iraq instead of staying in Afghanistan (where there was reason to attack) have his blood on their hands. In short, it's a shame he had to be a hero in a war that will be dismissed as stupid in a matter of years."

"I listened to (US) National Public Radio last night and they sang "America the Beautiful" in a medley. The audience joined in. Usually this kind of thing is jingoistic crap sung on national holidays to bolster support for the wars, etc. But this was a liberal show broadcast from a left-leaning area. It was so great."
