"I don't call the difference between "Virtually all" and 42% hair splitting, but we will have to accept our differences, I guess.
I'm not wild about either party, but the very fact that the majority of the Dems went against their "heavy hitters" raised that group of imbeciles a bit in my view. I can't believe that the Republicans were really that much less prescient - certainly not half as bright as the percentages would indicate - so I see it as proof of their robotic nature: Vote the party line, right or wrong. That certainly lowers that group in my mind.
As far as the "...we were content to let the UN, a very corrupt, and basically useless organization, try to limit his power..." goes, note that their inspectors got it right, even though we were not giving them access to our intel (probably a damn good thing, or some guy named Curveball would have them searching for mobile chemical labs). How "basically useless" does that make OUR intelligence folks? I don't see that as an argument for changing our stance, only for changing our intel people.
And here's the kicker: So we are shaking in our boots that someone is going to pop a nuke at us? Well, let's look at the most likely candidates, Bush's infamous Axis of Evil. We don't know what Iran is up to - back then we didn't know they were up to anything. Iraq denied having a WMD program. That leaves North Korea, who were restarting their reactor and pulling out of the Non-Proliferation Treaty months before we waded into Iraq. So we invaded IRAQ??? In the subsequent years we found squat in Iraq and the North Koreans set off a nuke, developed the wonderfully named Type-o-Dong missiles, allegedly aided Syria with their nuke program the Israelis bombed, and remain one of just 7 countries who won't sign the chemical weapons ban treaty.
Now the U.S. has removed them from their terrorist list, presumably because they have behaved for a few months, and if you can't trust a psychotic dictator, whom can you trust?"

""Virtually all the dems were clamoring as loudly as Bush for the war". Uh, we're talking about the Iraq war, right? The one that started in 2003? If the Democrats were clamoring so loudly for the war, you'd think that more than 42 percent of their senators and representatives would have voted for it. Contrast that to 97 percent of the Republicans.
If we are talking of them as a block, which is sadly the truth of parties these days, that block voted AGAINST the war. I will, though, allow some of your buddy's guilt to be shared by the Republicans, even though Bush is the Commander in Chief and very proud of being The Decider.
I do recall the sentiment of the 9/11 time quite well. I had and have no qualms about the Afghan conflict (except that it hasn't been properly supported because of this little Iraq adventure).
So now we've made a full loop back to a week ago - what did 9/11 and THAT conflict have to do with Iraq, other than lose most of its assets to it. Bush sold the incredibly vast majority of the Republicans and a minority of the Democrats a bill of soiled goods; whether knowingly or not is debatable. By the time even Dick Cheney admitted that there was no connection, the damage had been done: The country was destabilized and we were in Dick's predicted quagmire."

"Who knows? What was McCain afraid of? Who knows? I can't speak for either, but in the former case it could be that he was (justifiably, in my view) loath to dignify the smear attempts with a response. Maybe in McCain's case, too, although those queries were, once again in my opinion, a trifle more justified."

"Popatop, I believe in shades of gray as much as anybody, certainly more than a lot of people here. But can someone be "a little guilty"? It's a lot like pregnancy: You (well, I hope not YOU) can be showing a little baby bulge, or you can be a full-blown balloon, but either way you are just as pregnant. It would be equally hard to be a little guilty of a war crime.
As far as the conflicting evidence goes, I explicitly stated that there were disparate reports. Did Bush lie? (Cue FIB!) Yes, I think he lied some, but I think that a lot of his statements may well have been honest in his rather tiny mind. He wanted a particular reality, and having surrounded himself with people with the same agenda, he found a way to get it. Please show me where, before this post, I said the idiot lied.
Whether he lied or not is only important in the sentencing, not the verdict. When the USS Vincennes shot down an Airbus in, uh... self defense (well, it DID have two engines, just like the Tomcat), the U.S. government still had to pay the Iranians about 62 million bucks even though it was a goof. So Bush is culpable whether he lied or goofed. That's why it doesn't matter what the intel pointed to."

"So now Canada has a shitload of yellow cake? When do we invade?
Like I said, it doesn't matter what the intel pointed to (and it certainly didn't all point to that). What matters are the facts: No threat that was instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means, and no moment of deliberation. Hence an aggressive war. Hence a war crime. Show me the lies here."

"Did you look at the pictures on FactCheck? The main one is over 2000 x 3000 pixels, and you can download it and zoom to your heart's content. They also have one that clearly shows the raised seal, which has also been a source of contention.
As far as full disclosure goes, I find it hard to fault Obama for this until McCain releases his medical records (the "Here, have a quick peek at a gazillion pages - no cameras allowed!" thing was a total sham). Where Obama was born is of little import to me unless I find out that that Kansan woman wasn't his mother. Birthplace is irrelevant otherwise: I was born in Wimbledon and can't play any tennis whatsoever. On the other hand, I'd like a reasonable assurance that the septuagenarian I might vote for would not keel over dead in a few days, especially in this situation, as I know who would be stepping in.
So yes, a bit more openness would be nice, but let's work on openness that actually matters."

"Ah, yes... the nuke argument. Had there been a nuke program, there would still be the question whether such a threat was, "...instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means, and no moment of deliberation" - a subjective determination, to be sure, but if it failed that test, the war would be a war of aggression, hence a war crime anyway. As things turned out, that subjective determination need not be made, as no such threat was found. A goof does not keep your from being a war criminal. Can you follow that?
I do have difficulty following your argument about 9/11 creating a change. What you seem to be saying is that, if we had NOT been attacked, it would be okay for Saddam to get nukes, which certainly wasn't our policy. So no change there.
Then you say that he "became part of that whole 'death to America' crowd." Is this to imply that he was just a jolly, friendly guy right up to 9/11? He was in that crowd long before Cheney made his 1994 quote. So no change there, either.
Show me some Change I Can Believe in! ;)"

"Being born in Kenya would be a technicality as he still would be a U.S. citizen thanks to Mom. While the Constitution never defines "natural born citizen", the Naturalization Act of 1790, passed by Congress just three years later - a Congress including many of the signers - specified that, "children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens." So the constitutional argument is thoroughly moot.
On the other hand, a falsified birth certificate would NOT be a technicality. While it wouldn't disqualify him constitutionally, it would be an ugly indication of character. I don't know if this qualifies as "seeing" it, but there are some good pictures of it at FactCheck.org, a non-partisan organization (unless you believe everything the NRA says) that has ripped both sides for dishonesty on matters from Obama's scaring seniors about McCain's fictional cuts in Medicaid to McCain's constant twisting of Obama's tax plan. They make a good argument, so I think this is really just another load of crap. See:

"No offense, but try telling "you dumbasses are always so bitter, angry and negative" to some of the widows I know." - HarryPalmer
"To heap praise upon a criminal for things involving a crime is pretty weak. Bush waged an aggressive war against Iraq. An aggressive war is a military conflict waged in the absence of "a necessity of self-defense, instant, overwhelming, leaving no choice of means, and no moment of deliberation" according to Daniel Webster.
And according to the War Crimes Tribunal at Nuremberg, waging an aggressive war is "essentially an evil thing...to initiate a war of aggression...is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime, differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole."
The Iraq invasion was pretty much a poster child for Webster's definition. Did Bush really think Iraq was that sort of threat? Maybe - he sure thought a lot of other things that turned out to be wrong. That, however, would only be considered in the sentencing phase of the trial: Ignorance and stupidity are no defense against a guilty verdict itself.
The only other thing that could be exculpatory would be that really weak argument that this was just an extension of the Gulf War, which was authorized by U.N. Resolutions, but that falls flat on two counts: First, if the old resolutions were all we needed, why were we desperately trying to get a new one, only to be thwarted by those damned French persons (Ha! Showed them! We renamed French Fries! I always get a giggle out of that one!)? Second, if we invaded legally, we'd still be there legally by the same resolutions, yet we have acknowledged that if we can't get a security pact ratified before the post-invasion U.N Resolution authorizing us to be there expires at year's end, we would be in violation of the charter.
Okay, enough beating dead horses - it was necessary background for the following comparison:
Look at all the good we've done in Iraq!
Look at all the medical knowledge gained by Nazi doctors in the camps!
Somehow you just don't hear that second one very often."

"What, exactly, changed in the Iraq situation between 1994 and 2003? 9/11 was irrelevant, as even Dick Cheney of 2006 admitted (Wow! Dead-Eye Dick right TWICE!). Iraq was, four years BEFORE his quote cited by OZnBrat, identified by the State Department as a state sponsor of terrorism, so that hasn't changed. It certainly did turn into a quagmire, so that didn't change. So what changed? The only conclusion I can make is that the worth of American lives decreased in Cheney's mind."

"As far as "Victory in Iraq" goes, two things: First, let's check in again in ten years... Remember "Peace with Honor"? Second, if anyone but Bush claimed it, it COULD (after revisiting in ten years) have merit. But remember: The Clown in Chief got us into that mess to start with. So that's like wanting kudos for taking someone to the hospital you ran over while weaving drunkenly down the road. "Look at me! I saved a life! All praise me!""

"I can cite over 4000 Americans who ended up decidedly less safe because of this clown. How are the rest of us more safe? He's created a recruiting bonanza for terrorists from Indonesia to Morocco. Oh, we haven't been attacked... it that it? Well, we can discuss this next year sometime when the same attack-free span will have passed after 9/11 as passed before it. Even then it is a shoddy argument, given the rarity of the attacks: Two is hardly a sample to calculate from.
And even if there is no future attack, the terrorists have won by this cretin rolling back the Bill of Rights and justifying a good portion of our record deficit. I'll gladly suffer a few thousand deaths every nine years to protect my freedoms. Even with three thousand EACH year, that is only three percent of the estimated death toll that our inadequate health care "system" is responsible for. But he sure won't save us there, even if the majority DOES want it!"
